Only 11% of domains cited by ChatGPT also get cited by Perplexity. That’s not a rounding gap. Three separate studies landed on nearly the same number this year, run through different prompt sets and different citation-tracking tools. “Optimize for AI search” treats ChatGPT and Perplexity as one target. The data says they barely overlap at all.
Structured, complete product data is the one lever both platforms reward, even while citing different sources. Plug In SEO audits your schema completeness so you’re not guessing which gaps to close first.
This is the second post in our AI search visibility series. Last week’s post covered Google AI Overviews growth on shopping queries. This week looks at a different platform-specific finding: ChatGPT and Perplexity don’t just have different citation rates, they cite almost entirely different sources.
What the data actually says
Profound ran the same 100,000 prompts through both ChatGPT and Perplexity. Only 11.0% of cited domains showed up in both engines. 37.4% of domains were cited exclusively by ChatGPT, and 51.6% exclusively by Perplexity. Averi’s separate analysis of 680 million AI citations found the same roughly 11% overlap, and a Whitehat SEO study of 118,000 responses landed there too.
The citation rates themselves diverge just as sharply. Conductor’s AEO/GEO Benchmarks Report and TryProfound’s citation-pattern data put ChatGPT’s brand-citation rate at 0.7%, versus 13.8% for Perplexity and 9.5% for Google AI Mode. A single prompt routed to Perplexity is roughly 20 times more likely to cite a given brand than the same prompt routed to ChatGPT.
Only 11% of domains cited by ChatGPT are also cited by Perplexity, across three independent studies this year. ChatGPT’s brand-citation rate sits at 0.7%, versus Perplexity’s 13.8%.

One caveat worth naming directly: citation rates reported by different measurement tools shouldn’t be compared across studies as if they used identical definitions. Treat the direction and the scale of the gap as the finding, not the exact decimal point.
Why the platforms cite almost nothing in common
The mechanism behind the gap is architectural, not random. ChatGPT answers substantially from a curated, authority-weighted index, where Wikipedia alone accounts for roughly 47.9% of its top-10 source share. Perplexity retrieves the live web on every query instead, and leans on fresh, discussion-heavy pages. Reddit alone makes up roughly 46.7% of its top-10 citation share. So the two platforms are built to prefer different kinds of sources by design, not by accident.
What this means for a Shopify merchant
Treating “AI search” as one channel means optimizing for neither platform well. A few concrete adjustments follow directly from the data:
- Don’t chase one GEO checklist for both platforms. A tactic aimed at ChatGPT’s authority-weighted index won’t move the needle on Perplexity’s live-web retrieval, and vice versa.
- Structured data completeness still helps everywhere. Clean product schema is one of the few inputs that helps a page get parsed correctly regardless of which platform is doing the parsing.
- Community presence matters more for Perplexity specifically. Given Reddit’s outsized share of Perplexity’s citations, a real, unbranded presence in relevant discussions carries more weight there than it does for ChatGPT.
- Don’t assume one platform’s absence means invisibility everywhere. A brand nearly absent from ChatGPT’s citations could still be well-cited on Perplexity, and checking only one platform hides that.
What NOT to do
This is not evidence that either platform is the “right” one to chase, or that you should redesign your content strategy around Reddit specifically. A 615x citation-volume swing for the same brand between platforms, documented separately by Superlines, shows how easy it is to over-index on whichever platform happens to favor you today. Check both platforms before concluding you have a citation problem at all, and don’t treat either one as a proxy for the other.
Frequently asked questions
If I’m cited well on ChatGPT, does that mean I’m probably fine on Perplexity too?
No. Only about 11% of domains get cited by both platforms in independent studies this year. Strong ChatGPT citations say very little about Perplexity performance, and the reverse is also true.
Why do ChatGPT and Perplexity cite such different sources?
ChatGPT leans on a curated, authority-weighted index where Wikipedia dominates. Perplexity retrieves the live web per query and leans on fresh, discussion-heavy sources like Reddit. The two are architecturally built to prefer different kinds of pages.
Does this mean I should focus on Perplexity since its citation rate is higher?
Not necessarily. A higher citation rate doesn’t mean more total AI-driven traffic or that Perplexity’s users match your customers better. Check where your actual audience already goes before shifting effort toward either platform.
Start with the fundamentals both platforms need
You can’t chase ChatGPT and Perplexity with the same checklist, but complete, accurate product schema helps regardless of which platform is parsing your page. Plug In SEO’s audit shows you exactly where your structured data has gaps.
