AI overviews on shopping searches went from 2.1% in November 2025 to 14% in March 2026 — a 5.6x jump in four months. That’s not a rounding-error trend. It’s a fast, measured shift in how shoppers see search results, and most Shopify merchants haven’t noticed their category is already affected.

This is different from our general AI Overviews optimization guide, which covers the full framework for showing up in AI Overviews at all. This post is narrower and more current: one specific, dated finding about how fast shopping-search coverage is growing, and what it means right now.

What the AI overviews data actually says

Visibility Labs analyzed 20.9 million shopping keywords. AI Overviews appeared on 2.9 million of them in March 2026 — a 14% coverage rate, up from 2.1% in November 2025. AI Overviews aren’t a shopping-search edge case anymore. They’re present on roughly 1 in 7 shopping searches. The growth curve is steep enough that “not yet common in my category” is a shrinking excuse.

AI Overview coverage on shopping queries grew 5.6x in four months: from 2.1% in November 2025 to 14% in March 2026. Based on a study of 20.9 million shopping keywords.

The caveat worth naming: this is Google-only, US-market data over a 4-month window, and coverage varies significantly by product category. It’s not evenly 14% everywhere. Treat the trajectory as the finding, not the exact 14% as a number that applies uniformly to your specific niche.

What this means for a Shopify merchant

Google’s own guidance on AI features in Search doesn’t hand merchants a secret ranking formula. But the practical levers a Shopify store controls are the same fundamentals AI systems need to parse a product correctly. There’s just less room for gaps now:

  • Structured data completeness. Product JSON-LD with title, price, availability, brand, and GTIN filled in gives an AI system something concrete to extract. Thin or missing schema is harder to summarize accurately, so it’s more likely to get skipped in favor of a competitor’s cleaner data.
  • Review depth and freshness. AI Overviews commonly surface review-derived claims like “highly rated for durability.” A product with real, recent reviews gives the system something to cite. One with zero or stale reviews gives it nothing to work with.
  • Pricing accuracy between your feed and your live page. A mismatch between Merchant Center pricing and what a shopper sees on click-through is exactly the kind of inconsistency an AI system is built to route around.
  • Product-page copy clarity. Vague copy like “great for any occasion” gives an AI system nothing to extract. Specific copy — material, dimensions, use case — gives it something to summarize accurately.

None of these are new SEO advice. What’s new is the cost of skipping them. On a growing share of shopping searches, an incomplete product page isn’t just a weaker organic listing anymore. It’s a page an AI Overview has less reason to include at all.

What NOT to do

This is not evidence you should abandon traditional SEO for “AI optimization.” The fundamentals driving AI Overview inclusion — clean schema, real reviews, accurate pricing, specific copy — are the same fundamentals that have always driven good organic performance. Don’t stuff extra keywords or restructure your whole content strategy chasing a specific placement. Fix the structural gaps you likely already have, and you’re addressing both channels at once. And don’t treat 14% as evenly distributed across every category and search type — check whether your own category is actually showing AI Overviews before overhauling anything.

Frequently asked questions

Does this mean I should stop optimizing for regular Google rankings?

No. AI Overviews and traditional organic results aren’t separate channels competing for separate work. The same product-data fundamentals — schema, reviews, pricing accuracy — support both.

How do I know if AI overviews on shopping searches affect my category yet?

Search your own core product terms in an incognito window and see whether an AI Overview appears. Coverage varies by category, so a 14% overall average doesn’t tell you your specific numbers.

Is this the same as ChatGPT or Perplexity showing my products?

No, this data is specifically about Google’s AI Overviews within Google Search, not third-party AI assistants. Those platforms have their own separate citation behavior.

Close the gaps AI Overviews now notice

AI Overview coverage on shopping searches grew 5.6x in four months. The fix isn’t a new strategy. It’s making sure your existing product data is actually complete, since it’s now doing double duty for both traditional rankings and AI Overview inclusion. Plug In SEO’s audit shows you exactly which product pages have schema gaps worth closing first.
