A Shopify SEO agency can be the best money you spend or the most forgettable line on your card statement. The difference shows up in the first call, not the first report.
Most merchants pick a Shopify SEO agency on two signals: the price and the promise. But both are poor filters. Price tells you almost nothing about scope, and anyone willing to promise a ranking is telling you they will chase the easy ones.
So here is what actually separates the agencies worth paying from the ones that resell a template. This guide assumes you have already decided to hire someone. If you are still weighing that up, start with our comparison of hiring an expert, doing it yourself, or something in between.
Not sure you need a retainer? Our Quick Start Service is a one-time setup, not ongoing management — useful if the problem is that nothing was ever configured properly.
What a Shopify SEO agency actually costs
Start with real numbers rather than a quote in isolation. Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers worldwide and published the spread.
| Provider | Average monthly retainer | Average hourly rate |
|---|---|---|
| Agency | $3,209 | $98.90 |
| Consultant | $3,250 | $171.18 |
| Freelancer | $1,348.63 | $71.59 |
| All providers | $2,917 | $111 |
Averages hide the shape, though. The most common retainer is $501 to $1,000 a month, chosen by 20.4% of respondents. Meanwhile the most common hourly band is $75 to $100. On project work, agencies average $9,507.84, yet the most popular project fee sits at $2,501 to $5,000.
One caveat, stated plainly: that survey page was last updated in August 2024. So treat these as a baseline for the shape of the market, not as this month’s going rate.
The useful takeaway is the gap. Say an agency quotes $3,000 a month and a freelancer quotes $900 for identical-sounding work. Then one of them has misunderstood the scope. That is the question to ask next.
Five questions that separate a real Shopify SEO agency from a reseller
1. “What will you change in my Shopify admin, specifically?”
A real answer names fields: product meta titles, collection descriptions, image alt text, URL handles, structured data. A vague one talks about strategy and authority. Shopify limits what can be edited without touching theme code. So an agency that has worked on the platform volunteers those limits early, rather than discovering them in month two.
2. “Who does the work, and where?”
Many agencies subcontract. That is not automatically bad, but you should know it before signing. So ask who writes your meta descriptions and who touches your theme. Then ask to see a sample of that person’s work on a store roughly your size.
3. “What happens in month one?”
Good agencies have a dull, specific answer: audit, baseline metrics, keyword mapping, then a prioritised fix list. If month one is “strategy and discovery” with no deliverable attached, you are paying retainer rates for a kickoff call.
4. “Which metric are we judging this on, and when?”
Rankings move for reasons nobody controls. So agree the measure upfront: organic sessions to product pages, non-branded impressions, or revenue from organic. Then agree the review date. Our guide to running a Shopify SEO audit covers what a baseline should contain before anyone starts changing things.
5. “What do I keep if I leave?”
Ask whether the keyword research, the content and the app configuration stay with you. Some agencies work inside their own tooling and hand back nothing. That is the single most expensive thing to discover at the end of a contract.
What a usable proposal contains
A proposal you can act on is boring and concrete. It should name the deliverables, the first month’s tasks, the reporting cadence and the notice period. It should also say what is excluded, because every real scope excludes something.
If the proposal is three pages of methodology and one line of pricing, ask for the version with the task list. An agency that cannot produce one has not scoped your store.
When you do not need an agency at all
Plenty of Shopify stores do not have an agency problem. They have a setup problem.
Nobody ever wrote meta titles for your products, filled in the alt text, fixed the broken links or added structured data. So a monthly retainer is an expensive way to do a one-off job. That work has an end. So a one-time setup, or doing it yourself with an app, fits better than a recurring fee.
For reference, the DIY route starts at $29.99 a month with Plug In SEO. There is no free plan, but there is a 7-day trial. Our own Quick Start Service is $500 once, delivered in 14 days, with a money-back guarantee. Neither is ongoing management, and neither replaces an agency if what you need is monthly content and link acquisition.
Red flags worth walking away from
- A guaranteed ranking. Nobody controls Google’s results, so a guarantee is either meaningless or it points at keywords with no demand.
- No questions about your products. An agency that quotes before understanding your catalogue is quoting a template.
- Reporting built on rankings alone. Rankings without sessions and revenue can improve while your business does not.
- A 12-month lock-in with 30 days of deliverables. Long contracts are fine when the work is long. Match the term to the scope.
- No named point of contact. If you cannot name who does your work, neither can they.
Where to go next
Still deciding whether to hire at all? Our hire-versus-DIY cost guide runs the maths on each route. And if you want to sanity-check an agency’s claims about your store before you sign, Shopify’s own SEO documentation is a short, neutral reference for what the platform does and does not handle on its own.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a Shopify SEO agency cost per month?
Ahrefs’ survey of 439 providers puts the agency average at $3,209 a month. But $501 to $1,000 is the most common retainer across all provider types. Those figures were last updated in August 2024, so use them as a shape rather than a quote. Judge any number against the task list attached to it.
Is a freelancer or consultant better than an agency?
It depends on what breaks first. Freelancers average $1,348.63 a month and are usually one person with one skill set. Agencies average $3,209 and bring more hands. That matters for large catalogues, or when content, technical and link work run in parallel. Consultants average the highest hourly rate at $171.18 and tend to suit advisory work rather than execution.
What should I ask a Shopify SEO agency on the first call?
Ask exactly what they will change in your Shopify admin. Then ask who does the work, what ships in month one, and which metric you are judged on. Finally, ask what you keep if you leave. Vague answers on any of them are the signal, not the exception.
Can I cancel a Shopify SEO retainer if it is not working?
That depends entirely on the notice period. So it belongs in the proposal, not on the contract’s final page. Then match the term to the scope. A long technical and content programme reasonably needs months, but a setup job does not.
If the real problem is that your store was never set up properly, our Quick Start Service covers it once — keyword research, meta titles and descriptions, alt text, broken links and schema — in 14 days, for $500.
