Star ratings, prices, and FAQ dropdowns in search results aren’t magic — they’re structured data. Most Shopify stores have a partial set from their theme. Here’s the full picture.

Structured data is the reason some search results show star ratings, prices, and FAQ dropdowns — and others don’t. It’s also one of the primary signals AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity use to understand and cite your store. Most Shopify stores have partial structured data from their theme. Almost none have the full set.

Here’s what structured data is, which schemas your store needs, and how to add them without touching code.

If you want structured data added automatically — Product, FAQPage, Organization, BreadcrumbList — Plug In SEO handles the full schema set.

What structured data actually is

Structured data is markup added to your page that tells search engines and AI crawlers exactly what the content is — not just the text, but the meaning behind it. A product page with structured data doesn’t just say “Blue Running Shoes — $89” in text. It explicitly declares: this is a Product, its name is Blue Running Shoes, its price is $89, it has 4.7 stars from 243 reviews, and it’s in stock.

The standard format is JSON-LD — a block of code injected in a <script> tag that search engines read separately from what visitors see. Google, Bing, and all major AI crawlers support it.

Without structured data, search engines have to guess. With it, they know. Google’s official structured data documentation states that rich results “can make your content appear more prominently in Search, which can result in more clicks.” For e-commerce, Product rich results surface price, availability, and ratings directly in the SERP — before a visitor has clicked anything.

What Shopify includes natively — and what it misses

Modern Shopify 2.0 themes (Dawn, Craft, Sense) include basic Product schema by default. That covers the minimum: product name, price, description, and availability.

Not included in any Shopify theme by default:

  • Aggregate ratings (star count) — requires a reviews app that injects its own schema
  • FAQPage schema — not in any theme
  • Organization schema — brand name, logo, social profiles
  • WebSite schema — site name and sitelinks search box
  • BreadcrumbList — navigation path in search results

The result: most Shopify stores show as plain blue links. Competitors with the full schema set get stars, prices, and FAQs in the same result.

The 5 schemas every Shopify store needs

Product

Star ratings, price, availability, shipping & returns in search results. The most important for e-commerce.

FAQPage

FAQ accordion dropdowns directly in SERPs. Also the most extracted schema by AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Organization

Brand name, logo, contact info, social profiles. Powers the Knowledge Panel for brand searches.

WebSite

Registers your site name with Google. Enables a sitelinks search box in brand search results.

BreadcrumbList is the fifth — it replaces the raw URL in your search result with a readable path (Home › Collections › Running Shoes), making your result look cleaner and more trustworthy.

A note on Product schema and star ratings

For Product schema to show stars in search results, it needs an aggregateRating property with a review count and average score. Shopify’s native schema doesn’t include this — you need a reviews app that injects aggregate rating data, or an SEO app that builds it. See our Shopify product schema guide for the implementation walkthrough.

How to test your current structured data

Google’s Rich Results Test (free) shows exactly which schemas your pages currently have and whether they’re valid. Enter any product page URL and it will list detected schemas, flag errors, and show a preview of what your result could look like.

Run it on your homepage (WebSite + Organization), a product page (Product + AggregateRating), and a blog post (FAQPage if you have FAQ sections).

Only 33% of websites use structured data at all — meaning adding the full schema set puts your store ahead of two-thirds of sites before any other optimization.

Frequently asked questions

What is structured data on Shopify?

Structured data is machine-readable markup added to your Shopify pages that tells Google and AI crawlers what your content is — product name, price, ratings, FAQs, brand info. It’s the reason some search results show star ratings and FAQ dropdowns while others don’t.

Does Shopify add structured data automatically?

Shopify 2.0 themes include basic Product schema by default. But they don’t include FAQPage, Organization, WebSite, or BreadcrumbList schemas — those need to be added separately, either manually or via an SEO app like Plug In SEO.

What structured data does Google use for rich results?

For Shopify stores, the most impactful are Product schema (stars, price, availability), FAQPage schema (FAQ dropdowns in results), and BreadcrumbList (readable URL path). Organization and WebSite schemas support Knowledge Panels and sitelinks.

How do I check if my Shopify store has structured data?

Use Google’s free Rich Results Test. Enter any page URL and it will show which schemas are detected, flag any errors, and preview what your result could look like in search.

Does structured data help with AI search (ChatGPT, Perplexity)?

Yes. FAQPage schema is especially valuable for AI citations — AI engines can extract and present structured Q&A directly from JSON-LD markup. Organization schema helps AI engines accurately identify and describe your brand. The more structured and explicit your data, the more citable your pages become.
