There is a real threat to independent brands from AI shopping assistants, and almost every article about it points at the wrong place. It isn’t ChatGPT quietly handing your category to Amazon — outside Google, ChatGPT barely cites Amazon at all. It’s the assistant built inside the marketplace, ranking on ad spend and purchase history, where none of your SEO work reaches.

Most Shopify merchants assume AI shopping assistants send buyers straight to Amazon. The data says the opposite. Across 391,073 citations from AI shopping answers, brand-owned and manufacturer sites took 64.7% of them. Major retailers and marketplaces took 2.9%. That’s a 22-to-1 split in favor of the brand’s own site. It is the most encouraging number in AI search right now.

We covered the gap between ChatGPT and Perplexity citations earlier this month. That post looks at how little the two platforms overlap. This post asks a different question: not which platform cites you, but what kind of site gets cited at all. For the full evergreen method, read our AI Overviews optimization guide instead.

What the data actually says

LLM Pulse analyzed 391,073 citations from roughly 1,468 non-branded shopping queries between 12 April and 11 July 2026. It tracked five platforms: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity.

But the split is not close. Brand-owned and manufacturer sites took 64.7% of all citations, while major retailers and marketplaces took 2.9%. And the retailer numbers get starker up close. ChatGPT cited amazon.com six times in the entire sample. Perplexity cited it zero times. Almost all of Amazon’s 1,114 citations came from Google’s own AI surfaces instead.

So the fear that assistants quietly hand your category to Amazon does not hold up, at least not outside Google. Because these systems answer questions rather than list stores, they reach for the page that explains the product best. That is usually the page written by whoever makes it.

One caveat worth stating plainly: these are non-branded shopping queries in a three-month window, and citation is not the same as a sale. Treat the ratio as a direction, not a guarantee.

Where AI shopping assistants really squeeze you

The threat from AI shopping assistants is real, but it is not where most coverage puts it. Similarweb’s State of Ecommerce 2026 reports that conversational assistants built inside marketplaces are growing faster than external AI referrals altogether. Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping is the clearest example.

Those in-marketplace assistants do not run on the signals you optimize for. They weight sponsored placement and a shopper’s own purchase history. As Similarweb’s Daniel Reid puts it, they apply their own rules for who gets seen “in a way that traditional SEO logic doesn’t reach.”

So that is the honest split. Outside the marketplace, your own site is favored heavily. Inside it, you are competing on ad spend and repeat-purchase data. Both things are true at once, and merchants keep hearing only the second one.

Why this window matters now

AI is still a minority channel. It appeared in 11.4% of US shopper journeys in June 2026, up from 4.5% two years earlier. But 89% of those journeys also used Search, so shoppers are stacking the two tools rather than swapping one for the other.

That combination converts best. Journeys using both AI and Search converted at 23.0%, against 17.3% for Search-only and 12.5% for AI-only. The report is careful here, and so are we: extra touchpoints do not cause the lift. These are simply more considered, higher-intent journeys.

There is also a longer tail than most merchants expect. Similarweb tracked shoppers for seven days after an AI recommendation. They returned to the recommended brand at up to three or four times the rate of its unrecommended rival. Being in the answer keeps paying after the conversation ends.

What AI shopping assistants mean for a Shopify merchant

  • Fill in the product schema completely. Title, price, availability, brand and GTIN give an assistant concrete fields to quote. Thin schema is the most common reason a good product gets skipped.
  • Write copy that contains extractable facts. Material, dimensions, fit, care, compatibility. “Perfect for any occasion” gives an assistant nothing to cite. If your catalogue is too big to rewrite by hand, Plug In AI generates product descriptions in bulk.
  • Keep your own site the best source on your own product. Retailers can copy your spec sheet, but they rarely beat your sizing detail, materials sourcing or care instructions. That depth is exactly what the 64.7% figure rewards.
  • Fix broken links before they cost you a citation. A dead product URL cannot be cited. Plug In SEO flags broken links and lets you redirect them in one click, on every plan.
  • Treat marketplace visibility as a separate budget line. Nothing you do to your Shopify store changes how Alexa for Shopping ranks you. That is an advertising and reviews problem, not an SEO one.

What NOT to do about AI shopping assistants

Do not rebuild your content strategy around AI shopping assistants while they sit at 11.4% of journeys. And do not read the 64.7% figure as permission to ignore Search. Nearly nine in ten AI journeys still pass through it.

Be careful with the mirror-image mistake too. Some merchants now assume marketplace assistants will crush them, so they stop investing in their own site entirely. That reading gets it backwards. Your own domain is the one surface where the data says you are currently winning.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI shopping assistants actually send traffic to Amazon?

Mostly through Google. ChatGPT cited amazon.com six times across a 391,073-citation sample, and Perplexity never cited it. Of Amazon’s 1,114 citations, 1,107 came from Google’s AI platforms.

Why do brand sites get cited so much more than retailers?

Assistants answer product questions rather than list places to buy. A manufacturer page usually carries the most specific detail on materials, sizing and use, so it is the easiest page to quote accurately.

Does a citation mean a sale?

No, and nobody should sell it that way. Citation measures visibility in the answer. It is a strong leading indicator, but the study measured mentions, not revenue.

Should I optimize for AI search or regular SEO?

Both, because they are the same work. Complete schema, accurate pricing and specific copy feed AI citations and organic rankings at once. And 89% of AI shopping journeys also involve Search.

Can I improve how Amazon’s own assistant ranks my products?

Not through your Shopify store. In-marketplace assistants weight sponsored placement and purchase history, so that visibility is bought and earned inside the marketplace itself.

Make your product pages the easiest ones to quote

An assistant can only quote what it can read. Plug In SEO adds Product schema across your catalogue and flags the pages where it’s still missing, so the details behind each product sit in structured data rather than buried somewhere in your theme.
