Search for a shopify accessibility app and you get two completely different products in one list. First, one overlays a widget on your storefront and talks about lawsuits. But the other writes alt text for your product images. So they solve different problems, and their prices sit 25x apart. So knowing which one you actually need is most of the decision.

If the job is missing alt text across thousands of images, that is a content problem. Plug In AI generates image alt text in bulk across your catalogue.

First, work out which problem you have

These apps split into two groups. Still, buying from the wrong one is the common mistake.

Specifically, accessibility widgets add a front-end toolbar with contrast controls, font scaling, keyboard navigation and text-to-speech. They are bought for compliance reasons, and their marketing leans on ADA, WCAG and EAA.

Meanwhile, alt-text generators write descriptions for your images in bulk. They are bought for SEO and for screen-reader users, and they cost a fraction as much.

Alt text is part of accessibility, but it is one success criterion out of dozens. So an alt-text app is not a compliance purchase, and no widget writes your product copy. In practice, most stores eventually want both.

The five apps, verified on their listings

Every figure below came from the app’s own App Store page on 30 September 2026. Ratings move, so check before you buy.

App Type Rating Reviews Entry price
Accessibility Assistant : ADA Widget 4.8★ 42 Free plan, then $3.99/mo
Accessibility Spark ADA & WCAG Widget 5.0★ 48 $99.99/mo
Accessibility & ADA EAA WCAG Widget 0.0★ 0 $10/mo
ALTerator ‑ AI Alt Text Alt text 5.0★ 1 Free tier, then $5/mo
AltTextLab – AI Alt Text & SEO Alt text 0.0★ 0 Free tier, then $5/mo

The 25x price gap nobody explains

Look at the two widgets with real review bases. In fact, the gap is the most striking thing in this category.

Accessibility Assistant holds 4.8 stars across 42 reviews and starts at $3.99 a month. But Accessibility Spark holds 5.0 stars across 48 reviews and starts at $99.99 a month. Both listings claim the same compliance scope: ADA, WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 AA, EAA and AODA.

Two Shopify accessibility widgets with comparable ratings and near-identical claimed compliance scope, priced 25x apart: $3.99/month against $99.99/month.

So what does the extra money buy? Spark prices by monthly sessions rather than flat, and adds daily monitoring, monthly audit reports and a certification statement. Its tiers run to $209.99 for 30,000 sessions and $499.99 for 100,000.

That is a service model rather than a widget licence. Whether it is worth 25x depends entirely on whether you need the ongoing audit paperwork, not on the storefront toolbar, which both apps provide.

This app category is unusually young

One number deserves flagging before you install anything. Review counts here are very thin.

Two of the five apps have zero reviews, and a third has one. Only Accessibility Assistant and Accessibility Spark have review bases worth reading, at 42 and 48. For comparison, established SEO apps on the same store carry review counts in the hundreds.

That is not a criticism of any individual app. But it does mean you are an early adopter here, so lean on the free tiers and trials rather than committing annually.

The alt-text apps, and what they actually do

These are the cheap half of the list. They also overlap heavily with each other.

ALTerator ‑ AI Alt Text

Generates alt text in bulk across products, collections and blog images, in 18 languages. Its distinguishing feature is scoring: it grades every alt text from 0 to 100 so you can find weak ones. Free for 50 lifetime generations, then $5, $15 or $75 a month. It has one review.

AltTextLab – AI Alt Text & SEO

Reads each image alongside the product name, variant and vendor, so descriptions reference the actual product rather than describing a generic photo. Supports 130+ languages. Free tier gives 25 credits a month, then $5 or $30 a month, with a $39 pay-as-you-go option for 1,000 credits. No reviews yet.

Plug In AI

Our own app sits in this half of the list, not the compliance half. It generates alt text in bulk across the catalogue alongside product titles, descriptions, meta fields and URLs, so alt text gets handled in the same pass as the rest of your product content rather than as a separate tool.

To be clear about scope: that is an alt-text and content capability. It does not make a store ADA compliant, and no app in either half of this list should be sold to you on that basis.

What no accessibility app can do for you

This part matters more than the feature lists. It is also the part the marketing skips.

A widget overlays controls on top of your storefront. It does not rewrite the underlying markup, fix your theme’s heading structure, or caption your videos. Accessibility is a property of your whole site and its content, so a toolbar cannot deliver it on its own.

Accessibility Spark’s listing markets “lawsuit protection” among its plan features. That is what the listing says, and we are reporting it rather than endorsing it. Treat any claim of legal immunity from a $99 subscription with the scepticism you would apply anywhere else.

We are not lawyers and this is not legal advice. If accessibility exposure is a real concern for your business, talk to someone qualified about your specific store rather than relying on an app’s marketing copy.

How to choose

Short version, by situation.

  1. Thousands of images with no alt text. This is a content job. Use a bulk alt-text generator, or handle it alongside your other product fields.
  2. You want the storefront toolbar and a statement. Start with the cheapest well-reviewed widget and its free plan before considering anything at ten times the price.
  3. You need ongoing audits and reporting. That is the case where session-priced monitoring earns its cost. Be honest about whether you will read the reports.
  4. You are responding to a specific legal threat. Get advice first. An app purchase is not a defence strategy.

Which guide you need

This post compares the apps. Two others cover the work itself.

For accessibility as a practice rather than a purchase, read why accessibility matters in your Shopify store. For writing alt text that actually helps, including what makes a description useful rather than keyword-stuffed, read our guide to image file names and alt text. If your images are also slowing the store down, that is a separate job covered in the image compression guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a shopify accessibility app or an alt text app?

They solve different problems. An accessibility widget adds front-end controls like contrast and font scaling and is bought for compliance reasons, while an alt-text generator writes image descriptions for SEO and screen readers. Alt text is one accessibility criterion among dozens, so an alt-text app is not a compliance purchase.

Will an accessibility app make my Shopify store ADA compliant?

No. A widget overlays controls on your storefront without rewriting underlying markup, fixing heading structure or captioning video, and accessibility is a property of the whole site. We are not lawyers and this is not legal advice, so speak to someone qualified if this is a real concern for your business.

Why do Shopify accessibility apps range from $3.99 to $99.99 a month?

Because some are widget licences and some are monitoring services. Accessibility Assistant starts at $3.99/mo and Accessibility Spark at $99.99/mo, with near-identical claimed compliance scope, but Spark prices by monthly sessions and adds daily monitoring, audit reports and a certification statement. The storefront toolbar itself is similar in both.

Are these apps well reviewed?

Mostly not yet. Two of the five apps checked have zero reviews and a third has one, leaving only Accessibility Assistant at 42 reviews and Accessibility Spark at 48 with meaningful feedback. Use free tiers and trials rather than annual commitments while the category is this young.

Can I just add alt text manually in Shopify?

Yes, Shopify has an alt text field on every image and it works fine. The reason merchants reach for an app is volume, because a catalogue with thousands of images makes manual entry impractical. If you have a few dozen products, doing it by hand is perfectly reasonable.

Does Plug In AI handle accessibility?

It handles alt text, which is one part of accessibility, not accessibility as a whole. Plug In AI generates image alt text in bulk across your catalogue alongside titles, descriptions and meta fields. It does not provide a storefront accessibility widget or make a store ADA compliant.

Handle alt text with the rest of your product content

Plug In AI generates image alt text in bulk across your catalogue, in the same pass as titles, descriptions and meta fields.
